Naramake students are Inquirers!

This month, our community is focusing on the IB Learner Profile trait of being an Inquirer. An inquirer is someone who is curious, asks questions, and enjoys learning about the world. Inquirers don’t just ask questions, they also explore ideas, experiment, and seek to understand how things work.

Inquiry is about fostering a love of curiosity and discovery. You already know that children love to ask questions! “Why is the sky blue?” “How do plants grow?” “What would happen if…?” When we encourage these questions, we help our students build the confidence to investigate and the skills to think critically.

At school we'll be supporting the development of the Inquirer trait by providing opportunities for students to investigate their curiosities through our units of inquiry. Students will be able to ask questions throughout the units and will be supported to find the answers through reading, interviewing, experimenting, and field trips.

How can you support inquiry at home?

  • Welcome questions. Instead of rushing to provide an answer, try saying, “What do you think?” or “Let’s find out together.” This shows that questions are valuable and worth exploring.
  • Model curiosity. Share your own wonderings with your child and let your child see you look for answers in books, online, or by asking an expert.
  • Create hands-on opportunities. Cooking, gardening, building with blocks, or experimenting with water and sand all invite exploration and problem-solving.
  • Encourage reading and storytelling. Fiction and nonfiction books alike spark new questions and ideas. After reading, ask, “What surprised you?” or “What else would you like to know?”
  • Value the process, not just the answer. Celebrate your child’s curiosity, creativity, and effort as they investigate, even if they don’t find a “perfect” solution.

By nurturing curiosity at home, you are helping your child grow into a lifelong learner, someone who sees the world with wonder and feels empowered to explore it.
